Activists of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) protested in Hyderabad, capital of southern Andhra Pradesh state, in support of their demand for a separate Telangana state to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh. Around 300 protestors descended in front of the state secretariat, demanding a bill to be introduced in the federal Parliament for the bifurcation of the state.
As part of its plans to intensify the agitation for separate Telangana state, the Telangana JAC called for a shutdown in all ten districts of Telangana region. The state s main opposition regional Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Rashtriya Samithi (TRS) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist, or CPI (M), also recently launched a non-cooperation movement in Andhra Pradesh against the federal government for not introducing a Bill in Parliament for the creation of the separate province of Telangana.
Demand for a separate Telangana state has seen violent protests and political power play, with more than 300 people killed between 1969 and 1972. Several protests and shutdowns had brought Andhra Pradesh to a near halt last year as pro-Telangana activists pressed their demand for the separate province.
However, chances of an immediate resolution appear slim as most politicians are sharply divided within their own parties on this issue, experts and political leaders say.
